Competition Ts & Cs

  1. This competition is open to residents of the UK aged 16 years and over. If you are based outside of the UK, you may still enter, but need to be ready to travel to London at your own cost a maximum of four times during the competition.
  2. Any employee, agent, officer or director of Avin a Larf Ltd or anyone else professionally connected with the Competition or a family member of any of these is not eligible to enter this competition.
  3. This Competition opens at 12 noon on Sunday 1st October 2023. Closing date for receipt of entries is midnight on Sunday 10th December 2023. Any entries received after the closing time will not be eligible.
  4. To enter the competition, you need to complete an entry form and include a link to your video entry or upload it directly. Here is a link to the entry form: https://form.jotform.com/232663037525354. You are also welcome (but not obligated) to share your entry on MCA social media channels, either via http://www.facebook.com/musicalcomedyawards, http://www.twitter.com/musicalcomedyuk or at http://www.instagram.com/musicalcomedyuk. Incomplete entries or those not in accordance with these terms are invalid.
  5. Videos must be no more than 6 minute long and be suitable for viewing by a general audience.
  6. Parody songs and ‘mash-ups’ are allowed, but all backing tracks must be your original recording and not infringe the intellectual property, privacy or any other rights of any third party. If relevant, we reserve the right, but not the obligation, to screen, filter and/or monitor information provided by you and to edit, refuse to distribute or remove the same.
  7. Those submitting videos agree that all submissions may be viewed publicly, allowing the online community to comment, like or otherwise respond.
  8. Each entrant hereby undertakes that:
    1. They are the creator, author and owner of their video.
    2. They have not performed as a headliner at a comedy event to an audience of over 400 people or have their own TV show.
    3. The use of the video by Avin a Larf and/or any other sub-licencee will not infringe any intellectual property or other rights of any third party (for example trade marks, copyright, privacy rights etc).
    4. The Submission is free from any right or claim by anyone under any recording contract, publishing contract, or any union, guild or collecting society such as the Performing Rights Society. Entrants agree to inform the Promoter immediately if this status changes.
  9. Entrants must not include in their Submission or Footage any information they do not want other people to see. The Promoter is entitled to moderate and/or monitor any footage in connection with the competition and entrants consent to any such moderating and/or monitoring.
  10. Contestants may submit as many videos as they like into the competition.
  11. Any video which is judged by Avin a Larf to be offensive or inappropriate will be removed from the Competition.
  12. At the close of the competition 40 entrants will be chosen by a panel of judges (to be confirmed) to take part in the 2024 WGT Musical Comedy Awards. This will involve a series of heats at The Phoenix bar in Cavendish Square, London on January 13/27/Feb 10/Feb 24 between 1.30 and 4pm, whereby performers will perform eight minutes of their musical comedy material in front of a panel of judges and live audience, both of whom will vote. After the heats there are semi-finals on March 16th and 30th between 1.30 and 4pm. The final takes place on April 13th at the Bloomsbury theatre.
  13. The dates for the WGT MCA 2023 shows are included in point 12 on this page (all at The Phoenix bar at Cavendish Square apart from the final at the Bloomsbury).The decisions of the Judging Panel will be absolutely final, and their process of decision-making will be private.
  14. The MCA final will be a paid gig. The winner of the 2024 WGT MCA will receive £500 and there will also be a £250 prize for the ‘audience favourite’. This will be decided by our sponsors WeGotTickets. It is possible for the judges’ favourite (MCA winner) to also win the audience favourite prize. There will also be a £200 cash prize for our Best Newcomer. For the remaining finalists there should be a fee of £50, but this depends on if we sell enough tickets to afford this. All entrants to the competition may be invited to perform at university showcases and at other showcases of the MCA, including at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
  15. The Promoter will withdraw this competition or amend any of the details if circumstances make this unavoidable.
  16. Competition entrants will allow their name and approved images to be used for promotional purposes at no charge.
  17. By entering the competition, entrants agree to accept and be bound by these rules. The competition and these rules are governed by English law.
  18. Avin a Larf reserves the right to update or edit the rules at a later stage and any information regarding any changes to these terms and conditions will be publicised on both the website http://www.musicalcomedyawards.com and http://www.facebook.com/musicalcomedyawards.
  19. Acts who have already reached the MCA final on two occasions will not be allowed to enter.
